STe DMA sound file player v1.0
Freeware by Ken Newman
CIS [72437,1275]
This is a neat little utility I wrote to provide an easy and powerful
means of playing digitized sound files through the new sound hardware
of the Atari STe and TT. The program will not work at all on a normal
ST, it must be an STe or TT. It runs in either mono or med res colour.
All features of the sound hardware are supported. This program may be
freely copied and distributed as long as this text file accompanies
it, it is not modified in any way, and no fee is charged for it (other
than a reasonable disk fee as part of a public domain distribution).
Using the program is very simple, it's just one giant dialog box. First
click on "Load File" and choose a digitized sound file, which is loaded
completely into memory. Then "Play Once" will do just that, or "Loop
Play" will repeat it indefinitely until you click either mouse button.
The mouse buttons stop any sound while playing. You can choose a variety
of volume levels, bass and treble settings, etc. before playing the
sample. The "GI" in the mix parameters refers to the internal Yamaha
sound chip, which can be mixed or not with the DMA sound. Mixing the
GI sound at high volumes can produce a rather loud keyclick, so be
careful. New sounds can be loaded at any time.
The digitized sound files must be at one of the four sample rates shown
in the program, and both stereo and mono files in the STe format are
supported. One great thing about the rates is that the 25K mono rate
and byte data format is almost exactly compatible with Digisound by
Alpha Systems (not ST Replay). I say almost because the Digisound rate
is apparently not quite 25000 Hz as it claims - the net result is that
files created with Digisound's "25K" rate play back very slightly fast
on the STe. However, this is an easy way to generate high quality
samples with existing hardware, although 25K files get pretty large.
I will upload sound data files from time to time, please record and
upload some of your own! The sound quality is fantastic, really gives
the Amiga a run for its money. Enjoy!
